Tolman is the youngest of three siblings. She has two older brothers. Family members moved to England in the United Kingdom to Sugar Land in Texas when Tolman was just the age of a newborn. She lived in Oklahoma for 5 years, and after that, West Texas before moving to Sugar Land. In the Fort Bend Community Theatre, she began acting lessons at age 10. Clements High School graduated her in the year 2000. Baylor University awarded her a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in theatre performances. In the years following her graduation, she lived in Dallas and joined the founding member of Second Thought Theatre. After moving to Chicago to attend The Second City Training Center In 2009, she returned to Illinois to continue her studies in the year 2009. Tolman made her debut on Fargo which is a black comedy crime-drama on FX. Fargo was based on the Coen Brothers' 1996 film with the same title. The show starred Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman alongside Bob Odenkirk. Tolman has been praised for her performance in the part of Minnesota Police officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair said that Tolman was "calmly sure of taking over the whole show". For her role, she won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries and also received Best Actress nominations at the Emmy Awards and for the Golden Globes. Tolman was given an episode of guest-starring as romance writer Abby Berman on The Mindy Show the following year. In 2015, her second part was played by Michael Dougherty in the film, horror-film Krampus. Tolman declined parts in the supporting roles such as best friends, parents, spouses and even husbands after her breakout role in Fargo. She was looking for an unusual role. Tolman was cast on ABC's Downward Dog based off the Animal Media Group webseries. The show lasted for one year. Tolman starred on the ABC drama Emergence. It premiered on September 24, 2019 and ended with one episode in May 2021, despite the fact that Tolman tweeted it had "pretty excellent" ratings. The actress has also been in a guest appearance on NBC's Good Girls. She starred in 2021 as Alma Filcott on the second season of Why Women Kill and Natalie Green the Facts of Life, of Live in Front of a Studio Audience the third edition.
